Pets and Moving

Each year, approximately 12 percent of the people in the United States move to a new home, fueling the need for moving trucks and professional movers. While movers can help out with just about everything, they can't take care of your pets on moving day. That's up to you. Following are five ways you can keep your fur babies safe and happy on moving day.

Pack up Your House Gradually

All furry pets experience stress when things start to change, but cats are especially susceptible. Even a small change in their environment, such as a new box sitting on the floor, can freak cats out. What's more, cats can get physically sick because of changes in their environment.
Do not wait until the last minute to start packing up your house, it will stress your pets out more. Instead, do a little bit each week, so they can get used to a few small changes at a time. You may have to start packing a few months ahead of time, but your pets' peace of mind is well work the mess and disruption.

Inspect Identifying Information

Some pets respond to stress by running away. For this reason, you must make sure that your pets' identifying information is correct and attached to their collar. Also, make sure their collar fits properly and is in good condition.

If your pets aren't microchipped, now is a good time to do it. Microchips cannot fall off and get lost, which equals greater protection for your pets. Additionally, you can update your contact information electronically in a matter of minutes.

Find a Safe Place for Pets on Moving Day

On moving day, there are going to be a lot of people, some of them strangers, in your home. The doors will be open frequently, which can give your pets a chance to escape. To keep them calm and prevent the unthinkable, it's best to board your pets or find someone who can look after them at their home.

If you can't find anywhere for your pets to go on moving day, you can keep them home. However, you have to be diligent. Put your pets in an empty room with their food, beds and favorite toys. Do not allow anyone to go into the room. If it's possible, lock the door.
If you're not moving very far away, you can come back and get your pets after the move is done since it's best to keep them in a familiar environment. If you must bring them with your stuff to the new house, keep them in a crate or empty room until you're finished moving in.

Prepare a Fail Safe Travel Plan

If your pets are used to traveling, this part will be a breeze. if they're not, you will have to make some preparations. Establish a fail safe travel plan for your pets. In addition to providing security by way of a crate or kennel, be sure to provide plenty of water and take frequent breaks.

Take Care at Your New Home

As mentioned, frightened pets may try to run away. For this reason, you have to remain vigilant during the first few days and weeks at your new home. Do not go outside with your pet off-leash or leave them unsupervised until they get used to their new surroundings. Doing so may be inconvenient, but it will save you a great deal of heartache.
