As you begin packing for a big move, you probably already know that you will need plenty of supplies in order to keep everything safe and in place. But before you rush out to spend a lot of money on new supplies like boxes and packing materials, consider what you might be able to use at home first.
Don't think you have moving supplies at home already?
Discover a few things to look for and utilize.
Cushioning
To protect everything from furniture to glassware to delicate collectibles, you'll need plenty of cushioning materials. Most people buy newspaper and similar non-printed wrapping paper as well as rented pads and blankets. But you might have many things at home that can cushion goods.
Start with blankets, comforters, and large bath towels. Use these to wrap bigger items like furniture, hanging wall art, sculptures, and mirrors. Tape them firmly into place to prevent movement. In addition, smaller towels, rags, and cloths can go around fragile items within boxes and bins.
What else might serve as a cushion for packed items? Get out
winter coats and use their firmer structure to wrap around unusually shaped
items. You can add scarves, soft hats, and even thick sweaters as packing
materials. And don't forget your pillows.
Box Fillers
One element of cushioning that many overlook is to fill a box or bin completely so that nothing slides around even when the box is moved. Fillers like packing peanuts or Styrofoam aren't environmentally friendly and cost additional money.
But you may have some fillers in your house. Stuff junk papers into tight corners of boxes. Packing up the pantry? Look for sturdy but flexible dry goods like rice, flour, and beans. Place these into sealed bags, double bagging if necessary.
Filler like beans and small papers are perfect for placing
into unusual or tight empty spaces inside boxes. They can be molded to fit any
spot and re-form to prevent movement as solid goods settle and shift during
transit.
Containers
Many homeowners have some standard, used cardboard boxes around the house or garage. Start by reusing these if they are still in good condition. In addition, you can often find sturdy boxes if you purchase any alcohol - such as beer or distilled spirits - or other glass bottles in quantity.
Beyond that, though, think outside the box. What empty space do you have in various containers? Line garbage cans with plastic to form a great place to store liquids and chemicals that should stay upright and protected. You can also use buckets - inside or exterior - as well as hampers and baskets. Make proper seals by wrapping them in shrink-wrap or tying plastic bags tightly around them once filled.
Have you packed up all suitcases and duffel or large tote bags in the house? One of the best ways to use these is to pack a bag or two of immediate-use items to access when you arrive. If the suitcase is on wheels, use it for heavier items like books.
Look for small but useful empty space, as well. Fill up your
jewelry box completely. Use plastic pantry containers. Pack wrapped items
inside vases and pitchers before placing these into boxes. Many homeowners also
fill every drawer, since these can be removed for easy moving and then replaced
if necessary. If you go around your home with a clever eye, you will likely
find more usable containers than you expect.
