Once the movers get all your boxes to your home, you are left with a new home to move into. Here is what you need to do after your local moving team move all your boxes from your old home to the new house.
Once the movers sit down your last box, and before you start to unpack and settle in, you need to clean up. Even if you put down plastic and cover up the floors, dirt is still going to get into your home during the moving process.
Get out your vacuum, your broom, or your mop - whatever you need to clean your floors. You don't want to track dirt into your new home, and having a clean slate will make it easier to unpack everything. Wipe down all the shelves and surfaces in your new house so everything is clean before you start to unpack.
When you begin to unpack, start with the rooms you use the most. Start by unpacking and setting up at least one bathroom. Put down your rug, hang up the shower curtain, and organize your bathroom products. Your bathroom is a room you will need to use right away, so it is best to get it set-up first.
After that, move on to your bedroom and the bedrooms of your family members. You want to have your bedroom set up not only so you can go to sleep at night, but so you can have a relaxing place that feels put-together as you unpack the rest of your home.
Next, the first living space you should set up is your kitchen. That way, you can start preparing foods and snacks at home as soon as possible.
As you unpack, go through everything again. As you put each item away, consider if you will use or want each item. You may also find items you thought would fit in your new home but do not. Maybe the end table doesn't fit in your living room, or your bathroom over-the-toilet organizer is too big for the space above your toilet in your new bathroom.
Have a donation and throwaway box set up just like you did when you were packing so you can easily sort items as you unpack.
As you unpack, have a pen and paper on hand to create an online list of things you need. You will inevitably figure out that you need a few new things, such as an organizer to hang over the shower head because your new shower doesn't have as much as space as your old one. Or maybe you discover that you need an extra rug because you have two entryways, not just one.
Make a running list as you unpack so you don't have to go back later and figure out what you need.
Finally, once you are done with the boxes, recycle them. Many moving companies will pick up your boxes or allow other customers to reuse the boxes. If the moving company doesn't offer this service, drop your boxes off at a local recycling center instead.
